PERSONAL STATEMENT FOR THE APPLICATION OF MASTER DEGREE IN FINE ARTS
My background has played a pivotal role in the development of my career interests, consequently influencing my decision to pursue a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, in one of the most prestigious higher learning institutions in the region. I am fortunate to have been brought up in a community that valued education. Hence, I received the best education there was. One thing I have learned about myself through my experience is that I am meticulous in the way I do things. I am very keen on details and always strive for perfection. Thus, in search of the institution through which to actualize my dreams, I am certain that I have made the best decision in my career life. Personally I have always loved art and design. Throughout my life, I have come to appreciate the role of design in everything. When I look around I see design in almost everything. I have had the chance to experience good designs and bad designs. I am usually very keen to notice design flaws. That is part of what makes me very interested in mastering the skills of design. I do not want someone else to have a bad user experience because of a bad design. Whenever I do any design, I put myself in the position of the user and try to see things from their perspective. Hence, I design to suit the user.
After graduating from high school, I joined college, from whence I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Design with concentration in Graphic Design and Interaction Design. During this time, I got the opportunity to sharpen my skills in design and also broaden my design thinking. “Design is about solving problem solving.” I was very keen on every learning lesson and especially the group discussions. I also benefited greatly from the critiques who evaluated my work. These critiques helped me to see where I needed to improve. What fascinated me most about my course is the ability to innovate unique designs with strong user experience thinking and give rise to great user experiences. One thing that kept me going is my motto that every great design is founded on research and logistics. My efforts paid off and my motion and graphic design work were selected for the School of Visual Arts in the 2018 and 2019 Spring Show.
Besides, I have had a worthwhile professional entrepreneurial experience where I have amassed vast skills in the field of Interaction design. Being able to fuel my startup has been my major highlight yet. Through the help and insight from many peers and personal research, I am able to manage and coordinate tasks within my team, pool resources, and achieve great milestones. In the start-up, I have been able to conduct research for a dating app design to provide its features such as brand identity. As a major achievement, the application attained a 4.8 out of 5 in the app store where it was published. Through this experience, I have established that I am a team player and a good creative director.
At this stage in my career, I am interested in a platform that can help me actualize my dreams by sharpening my skills and I am certain that School of Visual Arts is the best place to undertake my program. I love its diverse nature that will help me grow not just my technical skills, but also professional soft skills that will be helpful in my career. I wish to utilize the K12 education offered in this institution as well as other educational resources. I am certain that my passion in this field and my self-drive will give me the necessary push to excel in my program. I look forward to commencing my program.
