48033 IoT zc 48033 IoT S2019 Main Project Assignment – Task 1.doc 1 of 3 2/08/2019 (zc) 48033 IoT Main Project (Assessment Task 1) The Design of Smart Fire Detection and Warning System Assignment administration Assignment Value: 40% Students to hand in groupwork Assignment is due: week 12. The assignment submission should take the form of a report. The total length of the report is no more than 10000 words. You should include a Title Page, the full report, and all references. All information sources must be appropriately acknowledged and a full bibliography is required. It is expected that this will be completely your own work. Therefore, using the ‘cut and paste’ technique is not accepted. You should read relevant material, and then write your report in your own words. This report will be submitted to Turnitin, and so will be checked for plagiarism. For more information refer to: wiki.it.uts.edu.au/start/Academic_Integrity www.gsu.uts.edu.au/rules/16-2.html Project Details Title: Fire Detection and Warning (FDW) System. Accurate smart fire detection and timely (early) warnings can save lives but most often can save us from getting into more serious problems than need be. Staying save and healthy should be one of our life priorities. A correct assessment or fire detection can be given at a short notice or it could be a early indication/prediction which can offer people a chance to protect themselves from a possibly very harmful situation in your family, social situation, work, etc. Gas leaks, a presence of CO or possibly other harmful gases/substances can have a long-term effect on our health and wellbeing. The message of impeding change in our health conditions can also be issued well in advance. We can protect ourselves, family members and friends from some seriously inconvenient situations. One can imagine many disastrous scenarios that could be prevented, if we only had a chance to know about our adverse environmental condition(s) in advance. There are many examples that can illustrate benefits of an effective fire detection system that combines an early warning system and safety/health assessment. Recent technological advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) have greatly improved our capability to merge the healthy life-style feeds (i.e. from Internet, social media, etc.) and real-time sensory data from the immediate environment to accurately predict most natural (and not so natural) hazards and disseminate rapid warnings based on effective sensing. However, the lead times and prediction accuracy may vary with the category and severity of change in measured parameters. Prediction capabilities and generation of alerts by the system based on an advanced IoT technology for monitoring, delivery, visualisation analytics and storage of events should be very specific and precise. Alarms and warnings can be disseminated in various ways ranging from sirens to flashing lights and recorded messages. The system may involve a joint private-public collaboration with police and fire- brigades. The system may operate on a local (small) and a global (large) scale. Routine checks and possible safety state change warnings can generated by the proposed system and can be made accessible to yourself, family and fire brigades(s). The IoT technological capabilities to support data acquisition, processing, analytics and prediction are significantly higher than organisational or social capabilities to disseminate alerts. For example, alarms and warnings of an impending fire hazards may not inform all potential safety hazards on time. A collaborative effort of several sensing devices and actuators is needed to improve the reliability of warning/alerting as well as safety measures (electricity or gas cut-offs). Specifically, to achieve the above aim, the following initial requirements are needed: 48033 IoT zc 48033 IoT S2019 Main Project Assignment – Task 1.doc 2 of 3 2/08/2019 (zc) • The system shall provide an upgraded safety change prediction and associated warning/alert delivery and/or dissemination systems through the application of state-of-the-art IoT technology and analytics. • The IoT should provide the basic health state pattern change representation(s), models and visualisations (GUIs) to show key temperature/humidity change indicators, the magnitude/intensity and severity of change, etc. • The system shall measure and predict their change, first/last occurrence and ongoing trend (time, day, location, period, reason) on daily and weekly basis. • The system shall use both sensor/actuation technology and/or life-feed (the Internet) to detect, monitor and generate alarms/alerts (disseminate warnings about the health, state of the environment, etc.) to nominated user (s), groups (family/friends) or community (fire brigades, police, ambulance). • The system should explore expansions into the social aspects of effective messages (i.e., friendly reminders about changing batteries, performing extra checks on sprinklers, gas leaks, etc. • The system should explore application of various ways of disseminating and mapping related health hazards. The system should be able to generate safety report, as well as, the use of predictive analytics and statistics. Submission Requirements A soft copy of the assignment must be submitted (in pdf format) to the Assignment Submission area (via Turnitin entry) in UTSOnline. Ensure that your soft copy of the assignment is first checked only via www.turnitin.com and then submitted if satisfying similarity (the lower the better but not higher than 25- 30%) is obtained. Late assignments will incur a penalty of 10% per day. No assignments will be accepted after 7 days (100% marks penalty) as the mark for this assignment will then be zero (0). The submission time and date should be shown on the receipt received from your submission to Turnitin. The Report must have a title page with the following information: • Course Name – Internet of Things • Course Number – 48033 • Report Title – Written Assignment • Report due date – Week 12 • Word Count – Found under ‘Tools’ on the menu bar • Name(s) and Student(s) Number You are to provide a Softcopy of all referenced material or other documents (such as pamphlets) with this assignment on Monday. Proper referencing of all sources is essential. Referencing should follow the Harvard system. If you need assistance with this contact the UTS library or refer to: http://www.bell.uts.edu.au/referencing, 90% of all your references must be from an authoritative source, such as Journal Papers, Conferences or Standards. Thus, if you have 10 References, no more than 1 can be from a non-authoritative source, such as Wikipedia or HowStuffWorks. If you have less than 10 References, you are not allowed to use a non- authoritative source. General Note 48033 IoT uses a problem based learning approach to the task of analysing an designing a medium complexity IoT-based application, via projects that have teams including no more than 3-4 students. For this assessment task 1 students are required to provide the team’s view on the project’s final requirements, usage scenarios, system design and testing (light versions of the documents only). The project report should discuss the rationale for the design and implementation choice(s) that determine feasibility of the solution in the context of the problem. The main project involves key phases of system development. Its focus is on the understanding of the problem space, driver requirements, usage scenarios, system design and implementation; this also includes builds/scripts/code, how resources can be used and critical risks mitigation applied. For this project-related items you will be working in teams of about 3-4 people. For 48033 IoT zc 48033 IoT S2019 Main Project Assignment – Task 1.doc 3 of 3 2/08/2019 (zc) Assessment task 1 it is recommended that you structure your groups from the beginning to ensure
timely delivery and a high-quality project presentation. The final project report should include student individual reflections and individual contributions. Main Project (Assessment Task 1) The task involves groupwork and aims to provide the main project development package that includes a set of light versions of requirements and design documentation and code/scripts which includes the following: • The architecture model and the system design; • Test/integration plans; and any documentation related to implementation for the assigned project and a Group presentation which includes a discussion on the deliverable plus its conformance to the major functional abstractions/components identified. The assignment should be completed by the cooperating small teams (of approximately 4 students) and integrated by the Group as a seamless Group deliverable. Project groups should provide IoT Architecture/Design and possibly a mock-up for UI. Consideration should be given to use of Open Source hardware/software (Node-Red/JS) and COTS components (hardware toolkits, IDEs, frameworks, DBMS, libraries, and middleware, test tools, etc.). Students should comment on design constraints and possible limitations of the technology. Assessment Criteria Criteria Notes Weight 40/100 Quality and usability of the overall report. Structure, logic and content. The system specifications, usage scenarios, architecture models, design tests, code samples, etc. in the report requires a note on why and how the proposed IoT solution solves the problem. Use of formal methodologies and representation to ensure design consistency. Use of proper labelling and naming conventions. 25% Viability & feasibility of plans, requirements, architecture, design & implementation The main system capabilities need to be identified. The targeted architectural and design qualities should be identified. The proposed model of architecture and design options should be discussed and justified. Compositional qualities and modularity of architecture and design should be addressed. This means it is expected that components of the system should be grouped forming functional modules that show thoughtful organisation. 25% Quality and usability of the implementation Maturity and completeness of implementation. Adaptation of the IoT technology including formal techniques and tools. 25% Quality of presentation, the team commitment & collaboration Functionality, innovation and creativity. A “wow” factor (attractiveness) of the design/UI, etc. Attractive layouts, mappings, mock-ups, etc. 25% Further information: Once you have chosen a paradigm to use for your project, the team should develop a solution that merits evaluation criteria for the final project requirements analysis, design and implementation. During the appropriate stage of your project, in addition to other evaluations, the team need to meet and discuss issues and resolve possible differences of the design views. These “differences” should documented in the individual contribution section(s) of the report which could represent a kind of an engineering logbook. A tip for the project teams: “Internalise one of the paradigms for the analysis of specification, design, coding/scripting, integrating and testing. You need to analyse, design, implement and test your project using a chosen paradigm/model”.
