GENERAL ARRANGEMENT DESIGN ASSESSMENT DETAILS © The University of Tasmania 2020 Unit Code JEE252 Unit Title Introduction to Maritime Engineering Design Type Technical Report Date Due 1600 18th September 2020 Task General Arrangement Design Length Maximum of 15 Pages + Appendices Description The aim of this individual project is to develop a general arrangement plan for an offshore platform. A client brief will be provided, from which you will be required to design an appropriate solution considering all the necessary regulatory requirements associated with maritime engineering design. You will be required to demonstrate compliance with the applicable design codes, rules, standards and regulations, with considerations regarding wellbeing, sustainability, engineering ethics and human centred design. You will be required to present your design in a technical report format (including drawings) which addresses, but is not limited to, the following aspects: • Outline of design background • Functional requirements and capabilities • Applicable design codes, rules, standards, and regulations • Overview of design methodology • Considerations for sustainability, human centred design, and engineering ethics. • Technical drawings of design outcomes Assessment This individual assessment is worth 25% of the full unit marks. Please read the instructions and design brief in detail. Consultation with the lecturer is encouraged. Please refer to assignment rubric for details regarding specific requirements for each assessment criteria. Assessment Criteria: 1. Select and apply suitable analysis, design methodologies and creativity in order to produce an engineering solution that satisfies the requirements of a client brief for a maritime engineering design project at a conceptual design level. (20%) 2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of regulatory, practical and economic constraints in the conceptual design of marine structures, ocean vehicles and maritime engineering systems with a special emphasis in sustainable design. (30%) 3. Effectively combine the use of teamwork, oral and written communication skills, conventional design tools and industry-specific software to create the design drawings, digital models and technical documents required to report and assess a maritime engineering design project, at a conceptual level, in accordance with industry standards and codes of practice. (35%) 4. Demonstrate an understanding of wellbeing, sustainability, engineering ethics and human factors in the design context by examining the engineer’s obligations to the environment, the society, their clients, and to the profession. (15%) 2 Design Brief A potential new oil reservoir has been identified in the Gulf of Mexico, and exploratory drilling is to be undertaken using a newly designed semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU). The design of the structure has been divided into numerous design components, of which your engineering firm was successful in their bid to complete the design of the MODUs living quarters. Your task is to develop a general arrangement for the living quarters of the MODU which incorporates all the elements required to comply with the applicable maritime conventions, design codes and design standards. Considerations must be made for end-user operation (HCD process) and appropriate provisions must be made to ensure compliance with the emergency response regulations including fire detection and prevention systems. The design of the living quarters will also encompass the design of the platform’s helideck facilities and associated infrastructure. The general arrangement of the structure should also illustrate the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems associated with offshore platform living areas. Requirements for the general arrangement include but are not limited to: • Cabin Areas • Recreation Areas • Dining Room • Galley • Coffee Bars • Smoking Rooms • Laundry Rooms • Administration Areas • Maritime Control Room • Equipment Rooms • Medical Centres • Changing Rooms • Helideck The following parameters have been identified regarding the environmental conditions in which the MODU will operate, and approximate dimensions and manning capacity of semi-submersible. • Wind Speeds of up to 220 kph (Hurricane Condition) o Prevailing Direction (NW) • Wave conditions up to maximum height of 20 m • Total topside main deck area of 90 m x 85 m • Capacity to support up to 4 decks of living area Additional consideration should be made regarding living quarter location relative to hazard zones, crane operation and escape routes. Your firm is not expected to include the hazard zones (exterior to the living areas) or crane configuration in the GA, reference must be made in the report to state compliance with 3 the relevant industry standards. Significant emphasis will be placed on regulatory compliance for the living area GA by the client, and successful bids will effectively communicate compliance with applicable codes for all elements of the design. All consultation and queries regarding the wishes and requirements of the client are to be communicated via the MyLO discussion forum dedicated to this topic. This will ensure that all information relevant to the project is consistently disseminated across all parties. Design Report You are required to submit a technical report which documents all the necessary information required by the client for a successful bid. This document should provide justification for the design decisions made in the development of the offshore platform GA, particularly regarding applicable design regulations governing each component of the design. The report will be used as a tool to support the general arrangement technical drawings provided by the design team. The report must be no longer than 15 pages excluding appendices and follow the formatting guidelines provided in this document. A suite of general arrangement drawings detailing each deck of the living areas will be provided to the client. It is expected that these drawings adhere to the Australian Standard AS1100 – Technical Drawing. In addition to the typical requirements associated with a general arrangement, the client expects to be provided with: • Emergency Evacuation Routes • Fire-Fighting Provisions • Life-Saving Appliances Ensure that all relevant dimensions, scale and units are appropriately displayed. 4 Report Layout, Style, and Format The report must also include an abstract, table of contents, nomenclature list, list of figures and list of tables (Tip: use MSWord tools to generate these lists automatically). A list of equations is not required; however, equations shall be right-hand-side numbered if included. Remember to write using passive voice and to keep the layout and formatting of your document clear, concise, and professional. Only pictures should be presented in colours other than black. Do not forget to proofread the report after finishing it from the point of view of the person who receives it. The final document must adhere to the following format requirements: • Font Colour: BLACK (no exceptions!) • Heading (all) font type: Cambria • Heading 1 font size: 16pt, bold • Heading 2 font size: 14pt, bold • Heading 3 font size: 14pt, italic • Heading (all) alignment: left • Heading Numbering: three levels (i.e. 1, 1.1, 1.1.1) • Note: Abstract, TOC and List of Figures & Tables headings shall not be numbered • Paragraph font type: Times New Roman • Paragraph font size: 12pt • Paragraph alignment: justified • Caption font type: Times New Roman • Caption font size: 10pt, bold • Caption alignment: centred (above tables and below figures) • Caption numbering: one level (i.e. 1) • Table data font type: Calibri • Table data font size: 8pt • Table data alignment: Right • Reference Style: APA 6th Edition (Tip: Use Endnote) 5 • Page numbering: bottom right corner • All equations shall be right-numbered (Tip: Use Mathtype) • All tables and figures shall be properly numbered and referenced (Tip: use MSWord captions) • Units system: SI
